In a deep underground bunker somewhere on the East Coast, several men stood watching Dora Schmiegal's speech. They had recorded it on videotape and played it over and over again, occasionally pausing the tape to consider something in depth.
One of the men was in charge. He wore a white polo shirt tucked into black slacks. His dark, straight, medium-length hair was pulled back and perfectly coifed. His hands, trained for martial arts, were perfectly manicured. He was tall, but not exceptionally so. He did not wear glasses because he had undergone laser surgery on his eyes. His vision was a perfect 20-20.
“So there you have it, gentlemen,” said the man, known to his colleagues only as 'Bob'. “This is your prey.” He turned and spoke to each of his subordinates, looking them in the eye, searching for any sign of weakness. “Your job is to scour the records, scour the archives, work with our coworkers throughout the network. You will spare no expense. We will monitor what we need to monitor and do whatever needs to be done. You will report on your results directly to me and to no one else. You will work quickly and discreetly. You will work without any time off until your job is successfully completed. Your country's future depends on the success of your mission. Do you have any questions?”
None had any questions for they each understood what they had to do. They had unlimited resources and tools at their disposal. Money to buy information, money to buy influence, money to co-opt and bribe. And they had high technology. Arrayed about their bunker were the glowing screens of dozens of computers and servers, telecommunications gear, the latest surveillance equipment and gadgets. Supporting their efforts were the best programmers, technicians and administrative personnel that money could buy. They were confident in their mission.
Bob, however, alone among his men, did not entirely trust their work. He had a nagging suspicion that there was something more to Dora Schmiegal than met the eye. |
