23. An Address to the People

It was the day before Election Day. The Schmiegal campaign was still flush with money. A stream of electronic credits from Emma's myriad transactions in international currency fluctuations had deposited hundreds of millions of dollars into Dora Schmiegal's personal accounts which she, in turn, invested in the election. Like the Cold War, the campaign spending of the Schmiegal camp had driven the other parties, desperately trying to match her dollar for campaign dollar, into bankruptcy.

She was fighting fire with fire, she told the nation in one of her many radio and television addresses. She was fighting the politics of privilege on its own turf, by its own rules, and beating it into submission. When the campaign was over, she told Americans, it would be high time to root out the weed of high-finance politics and re-seed the republic with the kernels of a clean, open, more democratic operating system.
