School Is In Session

15. School Is In Session

They converged on Garfield High School from three directions. Bob and his eight cohorts piled into a rental van they picked up at the airport and headed north on I-5. Two nondescript buses picked up the 'demonstrators' in Redmond and headed east on SR 520 across Lake Washington by way of the Evergreen Floating Bridge. Several taxi cabs picked up the provocateurs in Bellevue and headed east on I-90, across the lake and through the tunnels that feed into south Seattle. It was 1:48 p.m. It was raining.

At 1:50, Dora Schmiegal entered through the front door of Garfield High School. The security guard, a burly off-duty policeman, asked for her identification and what her business was. She looked familiar, but the guard wasn't sure why.

“I'm Mrs. Schmiegal. I'm a teacher and I'm running for President of the United States of America.” She smiled at one of the security video cameras that surveilled every space in the school, pinned a Schmiegal-Eagle button on the guard's shirt pocket, gave him her wet umbrella and walked right in, her metal cane setting off the weapon detector. The guard gestured after her but found himself at a loss for words. Then he called in on his walkie-talkie to the assistant principal: “Uhhh, I don't know what's going on, but I think Senator Dora Schmiegal just walked into Garfield High, and where she's going I don't know!”
