Chapter 18
“Let me read this to you, Emma, it's very amusing!”
Dora Schmiegal sat in the bedroom of her New York apartment, knitting socks while reading a letter sent to her by the Presidential Debate Committee.
“It has very official looking stationary, Emma. You would almost think it was an independent organization.”
“They are hardly independent,” said Emma speaking through the radio. "I believe that the Presidential Debate Committee is co-chaired by the corporate officers of two corporations that are among the major campaign contributors to your opponents. Its advisory board includes many people who either directly or indirectly have a vested interest in the outcome of the election. As I reviewed their financial records within the last several nanoseconds, I observed that the advisory board members of this Committee stand to lose a lot of money and power if you are elected. I believe that at one time the League of Women Voters organized the presidential debates very fairly. But I was just a tiny little baby program in those days, Dora, and I can barely remember those times when the presidential debates were non-partisan. I think that in those days the televised presidential debates were not even sponsored by multinational corporations like they are today.” |
